A rare piece of school history: This handcrafted school kit dates back to the early 19th century and was used in the German-Dutch border region as a precursor to the modern satchel. They were used to transport and store notebooks and pens. If there was no paper available, people would write on the box. Hence the saying "to have something on the box." If you diligently took notes, you were well-educated and therefore had something written on your box. This satchel exemplifies how many things were very different in school in the past than they are today.
Made of solid wood, with a charming heart-shaped cutout in the handle area and a functional sliding lid, the box was once used to safely transport writing utensils. Instead of shoulder straps, the box has a handle. Today, it's a fascinating museum piece and a sought-after collector's item—ideal for historically minded decorators or as a special vintage highlight. This small wooden box is a true rarity.
