This citrus crate label was used by Bradford Bros., Inc, Placentia, California. It shows a ranch house with two palm trees, orchards in the background. Printed by the Western Litho company, which sometimes gives the date of printing. This label has a tiny date stamp on the lower left edge: 748, printed in July 1948.
Background: These labels were glued to orange crates. These brightly colored wooden crates were shipped nationwide by railroad to be sold in local markets. The packers and growers ordered the labels from printing companies that specialized in this work and employed large numbers of commercial artists. The artists were not well paid and rarely received credit for their work. Most commercial use of labels ended during World War II due to raw material rationing and shortages. The labels were almost completely phased out in the 1950s.
Tip: Frame it and hang it in the kitchen. An extraordinary and individual eye-catcher.
