Vintage Silver Cup grape crate label 1950s

This fruit crate label was used by Lawrence E. McGee, Exeter, California. It shows a large silver goblet with sailboats in the background.

Background: These labels were glued to fruit crates. These brightly colored wooden crates were shipped nationwide by railroad to be sold in local markets. The packers and growers ordered the labels from printing companies that specialized in this work and that employed large numbers of commercial artists. The artists were not well paid and rarely received credit for their work. Most commercial use of labels ended during World War II due to raw material rationing and shortages. The labels were almost completely phased out in the 1950s.

Tip: Frame it and hang it in the kitchen. An extraordinary and individual eye-catcher.
