Description

This extraordinary Victorian pocket watch chain made of real hair is an impressive testament to the jewelry culture of the 19th century.

Braided hair was frequently used in Victorian times for personal memorial and mourning jewelry. Such pieces expressed affection, remembrance, friendship, and emotional appreciation. So-called mourning jewelry was particularly popular in England.

The decorative end caps and connecting elements are made of rolled gold – a technique common in the 19th century in which thinly rolled gold sheet was processed over a core. This method allowed for voluminous yet lightweight jewelry pieces.

The finely braided structure of the real hair is exceptionally well preserved and demonstrates the high craftsmanship of Victorian hairpieces. A truly remarkable collector's item!
