Description

This rare antique crucifix from Belgium dates from the second half of the 18th century and can be stylistically attributed to the late Baroque period (approx. 1750–1790).

The depiction combines several religious symbols typical of the era:

Two angels appear beside the crucified Christ, beneath them a skull (Memento Mori) and a cherub / putto. This iconographic combination refers to Baroque piety, which symbolically linked redemption, transience, and resurrection.

The cross is sculpted in three dimensions and exhibits a folk-art style typical of the southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium) – less academic than ecclesiastical high art, but immediate, narrative, and emotional. Such devotional crosses were often part of private home altars.

The surface, with its authentic patina acquired over centuries, underscores the historical substance and makes the altar cross a compelling testament to 18th-century Catholic everyday life. An exceptional collector's item for lovers of religious art, Baroque objects, or historical interiors!
