Description

Carved wooden ornament, probably originally made for a piece of furniture. Extremely decorative.

The motif of a bird feeding its young with its own flesh is a well-known symbol in art and literature, dating back to the pelican myth. The pelican was considered a symbol of self-sacrifice and Christian charity in the Middle Ages. The pelican was believed to rip open its breast to feed its young with its blood when no other food was available. This legend was often used to symbolize Christ's willingness to sacrifice.

Tip: Also suitable as wall decoration - simply attach a self-adhesive plate hanger to the back and hang it up!
