PRO & CONTRA: Getting into the vintage clothing business?
For months I have been thinking about expanding my stand in the antiques hall in Hauset and setting up an area with vintage clothing! It sounds logical and "easy" at first, but it gives the overall concept a new look and could bring about a lot of change. After all, the recognition value of my stand should not be diminished. (Regular) customers might even get the idea that I have closed my stand. No-go! A product expansion always involves investment costs, which also play a role in the decision.
In August, I approached my husband with a well-considered PROS and CONS list to ask for his help and advice!

The list:
PRO trading in vintage clothing:
-
Unique style: Vintage clothing has a special aesthetic that differs from modern mass-produced items. Many people appreciate this uniqueness and specifically look for vintage pieces to express their individual style. Clothing could therefore attract a new group of customers who will also invest in home furnishings at a later date.
-
Sustainability: Trading in vintage clothing promotes sustainability as it helps reduce the consumption of newly produced clothing. This fits perfectly with the values we want to convey with our overall concept .
-
Shopping experience: Vintage clothing often evokes nostalgia and memories of times gone by. This can create an emotional connection to the garments and lead people to take a closer look at these and other items in the stall.
-
Personal creativity : Trading vintage clothing allows me to let my creative side run free. I have always wanted to create unique combinations and outfits and advise customers on the selection of vintage pieces.
-
Promising: If I choose the right pieces for my target group, there is potential for profit . In the antique hall, there are already a few stands with second-hand clothing that are doing well.
However, it's important to note that trading vintage clothing also comes with major challenges! Despite the many benefits, there are also some reasons why it may not be the right business idea for everyone!
CONTRA trading in vintage clothing:
-
procurement of quality inventory : Finding really good vintage clothing that meets my needs is time consuming and difficult. It requires traveling (US) and browsing special markets to find suitable pieces. Vintage clothing is not on my usual shopping route for home furnishings.
-
Seasonal demand: Demand for vintage clothing can vary greatly depending on trends and seasons . Some vintage pieces are only in demand at certain times of the year, resulting in seasonal fluctuations in sales.
-
Competition: The vintage clothing market has become very competitive, especially online . There are many established vintage retailers and platforms competing for customers' attention. It becomes difficult to reach new customers in the online store.
- Investment costs: In addition to an initially broad inventory of various sizes, representation costs are incurred. A high-quality clothing corner requires stylish furniture / clothes rails as well as the opportunity to try things on or look at them (mirrors, etc.).
Phew! Lots of points to think through carefully. When we went through them together, it became clear to us that it is advisable to do even more thorough market research and develop a clear business strategy before investing in this area! It definitely requires good preparation, a clear concept and, above all, VINTAGE CLOTHING!
"Long story short" - We will invest!!!
I'm so excited! Let's do this!
