The famous antique market in Tongeren, Belgium

Just last Sunday I was once again filled with the great anticipation that comes over me every time I go to Tongeren. This huge antique market, one of the most famous in Europe, opens its doors to attract collectors, dealers and curious people from all over the region. Just a short drive from Aachen, I am lucky enough to have this unique marketplace right on my doorstep. In this blog article I will share my personal impressions and experiences with you.

Antique Market Tongeren Felicia

Tongeren - A historical setting for antique lovers

Tongeren, a charming town in Belgium, has not only a rich history but also a vibrant present. Every Sunday morning, Belgium's oldest town is transformed into a lively trading centre for treasures and rarities. This antique market stretches across the central square, two halls and a large parking garage, as well as the surrounding streets, and it is fascinating to see this historic place come to life.

Quality instead of quantity - A paradise for antique lovers

One of the most remarkable things about the Tongeren flea market is the quality of the goods on offer here. Unlike many flea markets, you will mainly find high-quality antiques and curiosities here. This market is definitely not the place to look for used household items or clothing, but is rather a paradise for serious collectors and art lovers.

Strolling through the alleys of the market, you will come across a fascinating variety of items. From antique furniture to porcelain, jewelry, paintings, books and vintage toys - the choice is endless. Most of the traders are true experts in their field and can tell you a lot about the history and value of the items they are offering. Mid-century design is also increasingly on offer, but this is still rare. Most of the traders come from France, Belgium and the Netherlands and mainly bring goods from the 18th and 19th centuries .

Act like a pro

Bargaining is an important part of the Tongeren flea market experience. Most traders are open to price negotiations, and it is quite common to agree to a discount of up to 25% later on . Overall, the prices are fair and the traders respectful - but if you think you can get a great bargain here and encounter clueless sellers, you are definitely in the wrong place!

Food and Drink for In-Between

After hours of browsing, your stomach may be rumbling, and the market offers a variety of food stalls offering Belgian delicacies and international treats. A fresh waffle or a plate of fries can quickly replenish your energy reserves and give you the energy you need for further exploration. On the large market square there is a super quaint café with a really delicious cappuccino, which can really liven things up, especially in winter!

Conclusion: A must for antique fans

The Tongeren flea market is undoubtedly a must for every antique lover . The atmosphere, the quality of the goods and the opportunity to discover treasures make this market a truly unique experience. Even if you don't necessarily intend to buy anything, it is worth a visit to admire the fascinating pieces and immerse yourself in the world of the past. Before you go there, you must be aware that there is no bargain alarm and the market consists of 90% professional dealers on both the seller and buyer side. Advantage: You can really talk openly here. No acting necessary! Saying "I am a dealer and my final price would be €X" is absolutely not seen negatively here, in fact it leads to a result much faster.

Figures, data, facts:

  • Duration of a tour: At least 3 hours
  • Parking: Various parking garages and public parking spaces available
  • Price range: $$$ (from $$$$)
  • Ambience: Top! Absolutely worth seeing!
  • Product: European antiques of the 18th and 19th centuries
  • Sellers: 90% Professional traders
  • Audience: 90% Professional traders (except in summer and holiday periods)

Have fun on your next flea market adventure!
